Digital transformation in the oil industry

What do flowers, rocks, and AI have in common? Surprisingly, a lot. The process of locating drilling sites for oil involves classifying thousands of rock samples, which requires time and effort from a scarce resource: expert geologists. Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) needed to make this process more efficient.

Together, ADNOC and IBM Services developed and deployed a first-of-its-kind rock classification solution. The solution uses Watson Visual Recognition , which was originally used to identify flowers, to analyze and classify 25,000 rock images per day, preserving the time of ADNOC’s senior geologists.
